Call of Duty is the shooter series that has captured the love of my heart. I started out as a terrible player who would get destroyed in Call of Duty: World at War on my Xbox 360. Eventually, through many trials I would overcome my “noob” status and evolve into being one of the top players in the game. It was fun being at the top but I would always face people who trash talked me for being so good.

Over the many years I found that the people who criticized Call of Duty for being a bad game were actually bad players. These bad players would think the guns were imbalanced, the game had a lot of lag, or any other excuse that they would come up with instead of blaming themselves. If these players did not complain and instead took up responsibility to improve as a player they would enjoy the game. They would see the three reasons why Call of Duty is the greatest shooter series of all time.

1. Flamethrower

The flamethrower is a weapon that is unlocked once a player achieves the maximum rank in Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer. This weapon could only be used for a short period of time and had a small range of effective roasting power. Once I unlocked this weapon I knew I had something special that would stand in the halls of video gaming history forever.

I had the power to roast players like I roast my chicken. The great thing about this weapon was that I did not have to aim at all. I could just spam flame in the general direction of a player and they would die quickly. It also had unlimited ammo during a multiplayer match but I had to suffer through a long weapon recharge time.

This weapon is one of the reasons why Call of Duty is so great because so many players ran around with it doing the same thing I was doing. We would all be having massive flame wars in crowded buildings, around moving tanks, and through crumbled walls. This weapon alone made World at War so much fun which would keep many players interested in the next installment of the Call of Duty series.

2. Killstreaks

The expanded killstreak system in Call of Duty was the single greatest addition to the series. It transformed an already good game into one of the greatest games ever. The expanded kill streak system was popularized in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and a player would only earn a kill streak by getting consecutive kills without dieing.

You had the option of selecting three killstreaks to play with in the game. I chose the predator missile (5 Kills), the harrier strike (7 Kills), and the AC-130 (11kills). My goal in the game was to get 5 kills which would unlock the predator missile. I would then use this missile to kill two players in the game to unlock my harrier jet. Then my harrier jet had a high probability of killing four players by itself to unlock the AC-130. Once I was in the AC-130 it was all over and I could spam missiles all across the map to dominate the game.

With the above example it is easy to see how the killstreak system was a fun addition to the game. A player would work hard to get many kills in the game and they would be rewarded with an awesome selection of aerial combat killstreaks. It added a fun dynamic to the game because players had to avoid being attacked by players on the ground and helicopters in the sky.

None of the killstreaks in the Call of Duty series could ever compare to the tactical nuke in Modern Warfare 2. It could only be achieved by getting 25 kills in a row without dieing and this was a hard feat. It was worth it because there would be a 10 second count down once the nuke was activated and the game would be ended with a massive explosive. Whichever team activated the nuke first would automatically win. With every game the developers of Call of Duty improved the killstreak system by creating new killstreaks and this would keep the game interesting and fresh.

3. Kill Cam

The Kill Cam was a fantastic addition to the Call of Duty franchise. The kill cam allowed players to view a short 3 to 4 second camera viewing how they were killed in a game. The kill cam could show a player how they might have been killed by either guns, grenades, snipers, explosions, or other kill streaks. It also showed what kind of weapon a player was using along with their perk set up.

It was a great addition to the first person genre as a whole because it added an interesting strategic dynamic for both teams. By viewing the kill cam, players could change their strategies on how to handle certain players. For example, if there was a player who is running around and dominating the game with a submachine gun, players can look at the kill cam to change their strategy. They might switch to a different load out that used assault rifles or snipers to handle the submachine gun player from long range.

The kill cam was also a great tool to counter campers in a game. Campers are players who sit in one spot the whole game to gain an advantage. This spot could be inside of a building or a hidden place somewhere in the map. Kill Cams allowed players to see where campers are located so teammates can gang up on them to take them down.

As a player I did my best to camp wherever I could but it was not that effective because players could look at the kill cam to find me. So instead I selected a set up of stealth related perks and weapon silencers to move around the map instead of camping. The silence aspect of my multiplayer build helped me gain the advantage in countless games.
