“Trailers. Trailers never change.” The recently released Fallout 4 one is no exception to this rule. Despite lasting 184 seconds, the trailer manages to tell us surprisingly little about the new features we can expect. Instead, we have a quick recap of the Fallout 4 story, which is nothing surprising: you are a pristine survivor from the Vault who goes out into the wild to conquer it. But here is what we can safely conclude based on the tidbits of information presented in the trailer.
Fallout 4 is set in apocalyptic Boston, with the protagonist being a survivor from Vault 111. An airship features prominently in the trailer, including a first-person takeoff scene, meaning there will be some form of aerial transport available.
There are recruitable companions, and yes, you will be able to recruit a dog. There is also a bobblehead seen on a desk, which were collectible in Fallout 3 and used to increase one of your primary stats by 1. This means the character will again have his skills determined by the SPECIAL system (Strength, Perception, Endurance etc.).
Perhaps the biggest surprises were the graphics and the animation quality. The graphics authorities on Reddit have judged both of these as quite poor and on the level of current generation of consoles. This means the trailer footage is actual gameplay footage and there is either no PC version yet or it’s inferior to what we see in the trailer.
We still don’t know the release date, but judging by how Skyrim’s release schedule went, we can reasonably expect Fallout 4 within a year. More information on Fallout 4 will arrive with this year’s E3, held mid-June.
