After being thrown out of Calgary Expo for supporting GamerGate, the Honey Badger Brigade is suing for discrimination. They’ve set up a legal fund and in short order have raised nearly all of the $30,000 they were asking for. At the time of this writing, they’re just under a grand short and with a week to go, they’ll likely reach their goal.
Like most GamerGate supporters, I was enraged at how the Badgers were treated. It’s hard not to get upset watching Alison Tieman recount her experience with Calgary Expo.
The most telling line to me was when she said “I hadn’t felt victimized until now.” The sheer hypocrisy of the SJWs is truly infuriating. Aren’t they about empowering women in geek culture? Apparently, any woman who doesn’t toe the feminist line can fuck right off.
My Initial Concerns
While I have tremendous respect for the ladies of the Honey Badger Brigade, $30,000 seemed rather excessive to me. I’m certainly no expert on even the legal system of my own country, let alone Canada’s, but it seemed kind of high. It even looked to me like they could find a lawyer to represent them pro bono. Do they really need that much money, and what will happen to any money they might have left over?
The Badgers addressed concern over the amount and their handling of it on their fundraising page:
All funds submitted to this fundraiser will be used for legal costs and costs directly related to our ejection from the Calgary Comics and Entertainment Expo. We will be keeping track of expenses and providing expense reports as we’re able.
At this time we are unsure what our total expenses will be as we pursue legal action. We will update this page as we get more information.
As per concerns posted in the comments here and elsewhere, a preliminary cost estimate for taking legal action is 40k+, depending on what legal avenues we decide to pursue.
In addition when all of our legal costs are finalized, we will ask the donors who’ve donated over and above whatever final amount what they want the additional money to go to, either a refund or to HB projects/cost recovery(if they weren’t covered via the lawsuit.)
If you want you can indicate in the customer notes which you would prefer now.
So far I find that satisfactory… so far. But I would caution everyone who gave to this fund to hold the Honey Badgers accountable when it comes to how the money is spent. This isn’t because I think they’re untrustworthy, but because we in GamerGate have been very critical of how the likes of Anita Sarkeesian handle donated money, and we would be hypocrites if we didn’t hold our own to a similar standard.
Give ‘Em Hell, Badgers
I love that the Honey Badgers have nearly met their fundraising goals. We need to make sure they steward that money properly, but I really don’t doubt that they will. So I say: fight on Honey Badgers! Give the bastards hell.
