Back in 2013 Archie comics did a 12 part crossover between their Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man comic books in which Dr. Wily and Eggman teamed up to conquer both universes. It was a pretty fun read, but then both these comics are some of the best all ages comics published in decades so that wasn’t surprising.
The best books you’re not reading
If you haven’t checked out these comics your probably should. They’re solid family entertainment. Notice I said “family” and not just kids. Anyone can pump out something kids can enjoy. But publishing a comic book kids can enjoy but an old cynical nerd like me loves too? Now that’s hard to do.
For those of you unfamiliar, the Sonic the Hedgehog comics at Archie have been published since 1992 and were based largely off of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon to come out around that time, nicknamed by fans as the SATAM Sonic cartoon.
This comic would develop into what I think is a tremendously rich and fleshed out world. At this point I would argue Archie comics has done far better and more interesting things with the Blue Blur than Sega ever has.
The Mega Man comic started back in 2011 and has been one of my favorite books since. It’s just been a fun, charming, and surprisingly witty read from the start. If you haven’t given it a chance you should.
Worlds collided, now worlds unite.
So as I said, Archie did a crossover back in 2013 between these two franchises titles Worlds Collide, and a few months ago teased a sequel titles Worlds Unite.
And then shortly after that announcement Archie revealed that Mega Man X and the Sonic Boom universe, which Archie also publishes a comic based off of, would also be involved. No doubt to the dismay of Chris Chan.
And then here in the last few days they began to slowly reveal all the various Sega and Capcom franchises set to be involved in this. You can read a full interview with the creators over at IGN. I must admit that at first when this was announced I felt a bit of crossover fatigue. But the inclusion of so many cool characters from awesome games won me over. I’m now in full “Shut up and take my money!” mode. My only disappointment is they didn’t throw Vectorman in there. Always loved those games.
What I’m hoping for
Obviously I hope this will be every bit the fun read it promises to be, and I think it will. But I hope it leads to a few things. First of all I hope it leads to a Sega vs Capcom fighting game. I doubt that will happen, as neither game company is doing all that well right now. But also I hope this leads to Archie doing some other comics with these characters. I’d love a Ghosts and Goblins comic. And maybe if this does well Archie will finally be able to talk Nintendo into licensing out some of their properties. Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, even Kirby could all turn out to be pretty fun reads in the hands of the Archie team. And then maybe the next crossover they do could be a Smash Bros comic.
