I was reluctant to get into the Amiibos, but a couple of months ago I got the Samus one on a whim. Even though I had some reservations about them, mainly that I wish there was more you could actually do with them, they really did grow on me. Currently I have eight of them.
Despite my early skepticism I have to admit these things are pretty fun. Should Nintendo make it so there is more you can actually do with them? Yes. But as a nearly life-long Nintendo fan, just having the little figurines alone would make many of them worth getting. Over the last few months, however, the situation around these things has gotten insanely out of hand
Sold out before it even hits the shelves
I just found out yesterday the Mega Man Amiibo would be going on sale this Friday, February 13th. I also found out every game store in my area could no longer reserve it and doubted they would have any spares. I was told to show up at store openings for a chance to get one. Much as I want a Mega Man Amiibo, I also have adult responsibilities so that’s just not an option. Looks like I may be at the mercy of speculators and resellers to get my hands on the Blue Bomber. Granted, I guess I should have been paying more attention. The only other one I really want is Pac Man, so lesson learned—I went ahead and preordered him.
How did it get this like this?
The market around these things has gone nuts. I was just told a week before something even went on sale that it was basically sold out and getting there first thing in the morning is the only possible way to get my hands on it. This isn’t some sort of rare 1 in 100 variant. It isn’t even an obscure character with only a cult following. This is Mega Man. He was a major selling point for Smash Bros 4 for me and I suspect many other people.
And while we’re on the subject of the more obscure characters, I would just like to point out Villager is going for around $50-$90 on eBay. For this damn character.
Someone is paying $90 for that? I swear it’s like the early 90’s comic book market all over again. This might as well be an issue of Youngblood with a holofoil cover.
But I don’t think it’s fair to place all the blame on speculators. Sure, speculators are assholes, but the real question is why isn’t Nintendo producing these things to demand? Why are they discontinuing ones when they’re still selling? I could understand why characters like Mega Man, Pac Man, and Sonic would only be limited runs, as there might be rights issues with Capcom, Sega, and Namco as to how much they can make. But if people are demanding more Wii Fit Trainers (although I don’t personally understand why they would) then I don’t see why Nintendo wouldn’t just produce some more.
Please fix this Nintendo
I get why the speculators are doing what they’re doing. I get why Nintendo would make less of characters like Villager than they would Mario. I even get why exclusives to certain stores like Rosalina for Target make sense. But what does Nintendo have to gain from not making as much as people actually want? If I get gouged by a speculator on eBay trying to get a Mega Man, neither Nintendo nor Capcom sees a dime out of that, so how do they think this frenzy somehow benefits them? Sure this is causing more people to talk about Nintendo, but I don’t know that is really translating to more money for Nintendo.
Please Nintendo, I’m begging you, stop the madness. Produce enough for demand already.
