Hideo Kojima released exclusive footage of new Metal Gear Online at the Game Awards. We took a look at the trailer and at first glance we think it looks awesome, even if its a PVP trailer. For those unfamiliar with the Metal Gear franchise, MGO is the online multiplayer feature of the Metal Gear saga.
Back in 2008, with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, gamers could also play against each other in teams of up to 8 players on five different maps (my favourite was midtown maelstrom). The service which was originally intended to last three years, was ended in 2012 to the dismay of many core fans, myself included. That is why when I heard that MGO was coming back, I got seriously hyped. Powered by the Fox Engine, the new MGO promises to be an all immersive experience, far more than its previous instalment.
Breakdown
0:28 — The video starts with a shot of a desert like map, demonstration the impressive graphics of the new MGO. Lets hope they will be as good in the actual game.
0:30 — As the Camera turns, we are treated to a demonstration of different character skins, suggesting that there will be a larger variety of customisation than we have seen in the previous MGO, eventually the skin of the protagonist, “Snake”, is selected.
0:46 — Snake then orders his team to get moving. At this point I counted eight characters at the spawn point, which shows there is no change from the previous MGO which allowed up to eight players per team.
1:01 — The team splits up and Snake can be seen sprinting towards a base, I may be over analyzing this but my take is that we are witnessing a return of the “Skills” feature.
In the old MGO, “Skills” were special abilities which had to be equipped. These would grant the user the ability to throw grenades further or run faster. Each player could have a total of 4 “Skills” equipped at a time. The opposing players are doing a patrol, perhaps they are NPC’s in the game which is cool but I prefer an 8 vs 8 deathmatch as they are more challenging.
1:16 — Two team members can be seen sneaking around the target base in order to outflank the enemy. In the metal gear games, stealth forms an integral part of the gameplay with some matches being dedicated entirely to stealth.
1:23 — As the team members close in on the enemy, one can be seen to be using octocamo.
1:30 — One of the new traps is revealed when one of the soldiers walks through it. Personally I prefer the porn mags from the older MGO, they were more covert, which is something that made them harder to detect. Hopefully the old mags haven’t been removed as an option.
1:53 — Snake spots a device which I presume is the objective of the mission.
2:04 — Snake equips an item which renders him invisible, the then uses the dart gun to take out the enemy guards covering the entrance.
2:15 — An enemy mini metal gear starts gunning down Snakes allies, which Snake quickly captures by using another Skill to outflank and take over.
3:19 — Revolver Ocelot blows up Snakes mini gear and the trailer ends.
No Date Of Release
Fans will be disappointed to learn that Kojima has not revealed the release date for MGS5, but that did not stop many gamers from speculating. During the presentation, Kojima wore a T-Shirt which had the text “tjugoandra den sjätte” (twenty second and sixth). Many believe that this is a hidden clue (Kojima is known for playing tricks on his audience). If we are to believe reddit, we can expect MGS5 by June 22nd.
MGO
The beauty of MGO is the gameplay.
Unlike COD, MGO is a multiplayer first AND third person shooter. The game can be set so that when walking, running or crawling, the game plays in the 3rd person (over the shoulder view). Whens shooting, the player can choose between first or third person views.
As someone who spent countless hours on MGS4’s MGO until the servers were shut down, I couldn’t be any more hyped. When the game comes out I will be there, owning all of you.
