Two scientists from the University of New South Wales recently performed a study of 82 online games of Halo 3 wherein their colleagues posed as a female and recorded all voice interactions from other players. The study analyzes the collected data and posits that bad players were constantly lashing out at the “girl” because they were afraid of losing status and thus access to that sweet, sweet poonani.
(…) evolutionary theory suggests that sexist behaviour is in response to a threat to a male’s position in the hierarchy, which if reduced, limits his access to potential mates
Their hypothesis was that when an empowered female enters an environment dominated by men, those at the bottom of the hierarchy feel their masculinity is threatened and want to assert their dominance by putting her down so she is sexually attracted to them.
Apart from restructuring the hierarchy, a high status female poses a secondary threat to relatively lower status males: as women are attracted to dominance, a high-status female is less likely to find lower-status males attractive
Surprisingly enough, the study even mentions “negging,” which is a PUA term, and gives its definition.
We argue that a secondary benefit of increased female-directed hostility is that it simultaneously decreases a female’s confidence and perception of her self-worth (i.e. negging) while simultaneously increasing the perception of him being a dominant (i.e. socially valuable) mate
On the other hand, data shows that good players were more supportive and amicable towards the “girl,” presumably in the hopes of getting into the researchers’ panties.
High-status males with the least to fear were more positive, suggesting they were switching to a supportive, and potentially, mate attraction role
The conclusion is that data confirms the evolutionary theory and that boys should be taught that it’s okay to lose to a girl in video games, otherwise this type of behavior could spill into real life and cause sexual harassment.
(…) our results suggest that a way to counter it may be through teaching young males that losing to the opposite sex is not socially debilitating
This study, its conclusions and the underlying experiment, though draped with academic splendor, are complete idiocy. I suspect Halo 3 was deliberately chosen, as it is the unholy trinity of console games, immature children and first-person shooters and as such hosts perhaps the most vitriolic, ear-bleeding experience imaginable. Anyone who’s ever played with a girl online knows they tend to get favorable treatment from boys to the point of it becoming a meme.
Still, this bizarre experiment is being promoted as actual science. This study comes from the same school of thought as Anita and their goal is the same: to perpetuate stereotypes about gamers as sexist, racist, socially inept and utterly vulgar to the point of governments enacting legislation that will enforce gynocentrism in gaming.
