Minecraft is getting a story mode. If you haven’t at least heard of the game by now, it’s an addictive world-building simulator. Minecraft is famous for it’s fun mysteries, imaginative features and virtual free range creation. It’s not a game about grandiose storylines or objectives; it’s more about personal fulfillment and patience. Below is the trailer for the game developed by Tell Tale, makers of such games as A Wolf Among Us.
Featuring the voice talents of Patton Oswalt, Ashley Johnson and Billy West, this game is meant to feel like a big budget film adaptation of the game series. My issue with this is that it defeats the purpose of Minecraft. It’s not that I am against games expanding their horizons and trying new things, but the fun part about these games was that you could make the world you wanted. This is now forcing a world and a set system of realities onto the imaginations of players.

More imagination. Less product placement.
What’s wrong with being imaginative? Why can’t players make up their own worlds, stakes and structures? This game seems to be Minecraft’s attempt to become more like the digital version of Legos. The Lego company has built up a media empire of video games and movies as well, but they’ve gone about it in a much more appropriate way.
Lego will create movies and video games but these stories are contained to small universes. They’re parodying Star Wars or maybe poking fun at Batman, but they manage to enhance their product in the process. I don’t feel the same way about this story mode game; it feels like a cheap cash in. It’s a typical storyline, filled with seemingly corny humor and the quest for an obscure object that will save/destroy the world. YAWN!
I am just not interested in this game at all, and I feel like it cheapens the brand of Minecraft. But that’s just one man’s opinion: what are your thoughts on this trailer and upcoming game?
